NEW HAVEN RUGBY spring 2006 results NEW HAVEN RUGBY

30 April, Sunday | FDR Park | Philadelphia, PA
L 26 - 18 New Haven A vs Boston Irish Wolfhounds A

Sunday brought the Wolfhounds as it has so many times before. New Haven got the early lead but a mistake at our try line cost us dearly as the Hounds were awarded a penalty try in front of the posts and New Haven was a man down for 10 minutes. Like the championship team that they are, the Hounds capitalized on this and put points on the board. New Haven fought valiantly but could not fully recover from the deficit.

W 31 - 19 New Haven A vs Schuylkill River A

New Haven opened very strongly against the #1 seed out of MARFU in the opening game of the competitive region 4 playoffs. Stingy defense and toughness put New Haven up early though S'kill River fought back and nearly tied it going into halftime. New Haven started the second half strong and put points on the board that S'kill had a tough time answering for. They surged late but it was not enough as New Haven ran it out to secure the #3 or 4 seed going into nationals.

22 April, Saturday | Edgewood Park | New Haven, CT
W 75 - 0 New Haven A vs CT Yankees A
W 49 - 5 New Haven B vs CT Yankees B

On another cloudy dreary day the Old Blacks hosted the rival Connecticut Yankees. The Yankees have seen better days as they have relatively new side void of the players who normally would show up for the playoff run. The Old Blacks showed little to no mercy though and scored early and often building a 54-0 halftime lead as Pablo sliced and diced the Yankee side on his way to Man of the Match. It was a great day for all as the rain held out, the BBQ was hot and the beer cold. Thanks to all who helped make it a great day. Final Score A side 75-0 and B side 49-5.

08 April, Saturday | Edgewood Park | New Haven, CT
W 17 - 0 New Haven A vs Maryland Exiles A

Needing a win to continue the playoff run New Haven took to the pitch under awful conditions for this one off match. Sloppy play, slippery ball, and regular knock-ons plagued both sides but New Haven kept to the game plan and convincingly beat MD. The win puts New Haven into the national round of 16!

W 32 - 7 New Haven A vs Dartmouth A
W ?? - ?? New Haven B vs Dartmouth B

New Haven started off this friendly by trying to play the same style as the college guys. That proved somewhat ineffective so New Haven went back to their team plan and drove the smaller fitter college players up and down the field in the second half. Good luck to Dartmouth in the Ivy League tournament next weekend in New Haven and at national playoffs.

L 35 - 18 New Haven A vs Boston Irish Wolfhounds A

After a tough physical match on Saturday, New Haven took to the dusty desert wasteland like pitch at Van Cortland to face off against long time rival Boston Irish Wolfhounds for the NRU title. The Wolfhounds came at us ferociously and with a score to settle from the fall. New Haven, missing 5 players from Saturday's lineup, let in some hard earned first half tries. Huge second half efforts held BIW to just three penalty goals as New Haven scored a few tries of their own. Congratulations to the Wolfhounds for taking 1st. We'll see them again soon enough.

W 24 - 20 New Haven A vs NY-Conn A

Needing a win to secure a home playoff match in the upcoming NRU vs MARFU crossover match, the team played excellent defensive rugby in the first half to go into the break down 0-8. NY-Conn attacked hard but New Haven weathered the storm during 30 minutes of defense in the first half to come back firing in the second half with 24 unanswered points before two yellow cards gave NY-Conn some opportunities to take the game but they couldn't capitalize enough of them.

W 41 - 15 New Haven vs Maryland Exiles

New Haven traveled to just outside DC and played the first game of a three match road trip weekend. Good weather saw New Haven slow to get going, but victorious on the day. The Old Black started to show signs of life and some solid moments amidst some lingering rust.

04 March, Saturday | Cheyney State University | Media, PA
W 30 - 20 New Haven vs Media Wolfpack

New Haven started off this spring differently than recent years. Instead of going to sunny warm Ft Lauderdale the club opted to go to cloudy, windy and cold, Media, PA. Not sure if it was the cold or the layers of rust accumulated over the winter months off, but New Haven looked a bit out of sorts against this MARFU DII playoff side.
