NEW HAVEN RUGBY Fall 2009 results NEW HAVEN RUGBY

| Sage Park | Berlin

The New Haven 15s season got off to a slow start with a disappointing 27-18 loss to the Hartford Wanderers in the third annual Battle in Berlin. After fighting back from an early 13-0 deficit to tie the game at the half, New Haven let their intra-state rivals cross the line one too many times in the late minutes. The good news, though, is that the real winners of the event were the CT chapters of charities fighting Cystic Fibrosis and Multiple Sclerosis. Thanks to all who attended.

New Haven rolled to their first win of the fall with a comprehensive 73-0 outing against D-1 newcomers South Shore. Old Black starters Pereira, Ries, Connors, and Ihaka all took away hattricks, with the lucky 13th try going to replacement Phil Folta. The second side extended their winning streak to a perfect 3-0.

New Haven battled back from a 15-9 halftime deficit to win a key road match 33-15; second-half tries from Pete Pereira and Eliott Wangaard were complemented by a monumental kicking performance by fly-half Roy Leoni, whose 23 point haul earned him Man of the Match. One of the most emphatic second half performances in recent memory has cemented 2-2 New Haven as a team to watch in the fall's NERFU standings. The second side also came away with a victory, extending their undefeated streak to 4 games.

Game summary

| The Boulevard | New Haven

In a must-win home playoff match, New Haven came through with a solid 22-10 victory in horrid conditions. Player-coach Craig Wells scored the first try, followed by a pair of scores by hard-running forward Pete Pereira, and capped off by a spectacular touch-down from wing Elliot Wangaard. The victory seals a spot in the spring playoffs for the Old Black, with seeding to be decided by next weekend's tournament at Randall Island.
