NEW HAVEN RUGBY mystic river, october 8, 2005 NEW HAVEN RUGBY

New Haven played some of the most disciplined rugby of the year and was able to keep most of the possession throughout the game.  Led by Victor Milani, whose motor never seems to stop, the home team's pack eventually wore down the visitors and with a late try by Ewan Robinson New Haven secured a vital 37-23 victory and first place in the DI NERFU Conference.

The weather was not cooperating on the day and the boys from New Haven looked as though they did not really want to be there for the first ten minutes.  An opening kick off muffed by the home team led to an early try by the visitors.  Luckily that woke New Haven up and they camped out in the Mystic half for most of the first 40 minutes leading 23-8 at the half.  A great day for the pack saw most of the tries coming from them on both sides of the ball as Mystic put in 3 tries (2 from forward play and 1 from the backs) and the New Haven pack put in 3 of their 4 tries.

In a steady rain at East Shore Park, New Haven's second side garnered their third win of the season and second in a row with a 54-12 decision over Mystic River's B's. Ryan Garcia earned Man of the Match honors for his efforts, which included outracing 3 Mystic defenders for a first half try. Also scoring tries for New Haven were Sau Ah Loi and Mike Longo. Mike chipped in with an impressive 4 out of 5 on conversions. This match marked a few 'firsts' for four club members: Matt Wargo and Patrick Sullivan scored their first tries as members of the Old Black (Sully would also add his second). In addition, a couple of familiar faces, Pete Pereira and Steve Sax, donned the second side jersey for their first action of the fall. This was Pete's debut after suffering an injury during pre-season training and he demonstrated that he was rounding into form with a try and 3 conversions. Pereira did show a little rust from the layoff, though, as one of the Mystic centers, a former front rower, was able to catch him during a breakaway down the sideline. In addition to the offensive production, the Old Black did a fine job on defense, holding Mystic River to a try in each half. The game was ably officiated by New Haven's own Dave Fischer. Dave did a fine job letting the game flow, considering the conditions. The only 'peanut gallery' comments thrown his way from the sideline were that the first half lasted approximately 55 minutes.
