W 64-5 New Haven A @ Amoskeag A
W 36-0 New Haven B @ Amoskeag B

Needing a win to secure a home playoff match, New Haven dominated every phase of play in a 64-5 rout of Amoskeag.

Rust from a long bus ride was evident at the beginning of the match as a series of knocks nullified strong attacks, but Amoskeag was unable to penetrate the New Haven defense led by inside center and captain Jason Smith.

At the 15-minute mark fly half Jacko Ah Hoy broke through at the goal line with a slick side-step and put the ball down untouched to give the Old Black a lead they would never relinquish. Tui Osborne added a brilliant 50-meter run where he shook off three tacklers and sprinted by two more, Victor Milani blocked a kick and pounced on the loose ball, and Ew an Robinson coasted in after a long run to stake New Haven to a 26-0 halftime lead.

After a stiff halftime lecture from coach Frank Heaven about undisciplined whinging and poor ball retention, the second half was all New Haven. Props Tony Sollima and Burt Hale led the way with a try each, the later off a well-designed lineout play from 10 meters out.

Supersub Pete Pereira entered at the 55 minute mark and his three quick scores put the match out of reach. Wing Leo Connors brought the tally to 10 before Amoskeag broke through in the corner with a late try to finish the scoring.

"We had some poor play in the first half," said coach Heaven. "But the mark of a good rugby club is winning the matches you should win, and that's what we did today. I'm proud of our execution in the scrums today and how our reserves filled in without missing a beat."

Next up for New Haven is a Tuesday night match against the Connecticut Yankees. A win will bring the club's first ever Division I league championship and the top seed for the Northeastern playoffs.

B-Side Report
Ageless wonder Mike Longo scored three tries in a 30-minute B-side match that was shortened due to lack of numbers. On the third he outran two players that combined were still only half his age. New hooker Brian from Southern put in a strong effort while the "Doctor, Doctor" connection worked well together in the centers. At fly-half Jay Rubino proved once more that he has never seen a hole that he didn't like and Pereira was in good form running over, around, and through all tacklers. New Haven put in a try every five minutes to post a 36-0 win over a tired Amoskeag side.

Notes
"Polish" Andy Boyanowski suffered a separated shoulder in the B-side match, and is questionable for Tuesday.Jay "Rubaldo" Rubino lost his bet that Pete "Bald Bull" Pereira couldn't score three tries, and now has to cover Pete for three hours at the bar.thanks to Jay for his contribution that made the bus possible, and thanks to driver Jakob for his support of the enthusiastic singing on the trip home...rookies Brian, Ryan, and Jake put on a brilliant sendup of 272.overheard after the skit, J-rod to Brian: "If you lost 30 pounds you might look more like me with your shirt off." Brian to J-rod: "If I lost 30 pounds I might hit more like you too."
