As opening games go it really does not get any better then The WOO v. New Haven . Two rivals who battled in DII for years went on to DI and continue to play tight matches with great endings. Worcester coming off a 3 rd place finish in the 2005 DI national playoffs and New Haven coming off a disappointing early exit from those same playoffs. Early in last year's playoffs these two teams played a hard fought 13-7 match which was just one of many which ended in a slim margin of defeat for the Old Blacks.
This game started no differently. With some early excitement provided by eight man Ewan and new comer Tui playing #13, New Haven took an early 10-0 lead. Even though Worcester had a large amount of turnover from last year's team they proved that they were not ready to roll over. Led by some inspired play by their veteran pack they pushed over two tries to tie up the score at 10 a piece. By halftime New Haven had pushed back ahead by a score of 17-10.
The second half saw New Haven exerted its will and with some exciting open rugby led by the aforementioned Tui and Ewan, New Haven put up a quick 10 points and started running away with the game. Late in the second half some old bad blood flared up and with both teams losing their cool a yellow card was given to John Ward for hitting the fly half about 2 days late (who has yet to pay his fine..where is that 30 pack?) and Worcester was able to pound in two late tries and earn themselves a bonus point. Fortunately it was too little too late and New Haven came away with a 36-20 win.
In the B-game, which I missed part of the first half do to the fact that I was still dragging my leg around from the first game, we started quickly and never really stopped. Led by some much needed contributions from the OLD BOYS Bobby Chet (great to see him back!!), Mr. Burns and Cupcake and some much needed fresh blood from the Yale boys, Saving Private Ryan and Lance Armstrong (both of which will be surely seeing some A time) we dominated from start to finish. A 33-0??? win saw Private Ryan run in three tries, Lance ride his bike all of the French backline and Big John Stud beat up the pack. A great win for the boys and a double shot for the new comers at the bar.
The after match saw the Wooster boys playing some drinking games that they had obviously been practicing heavily at and the New Haven boys show up sometime near 9 pm (poor display). Although the team from the Woo did not seem to care and the after match speech is always better without having to keep PC in front of the losing team.
Great job by All.
