New Haven V Boston Irish Wolfhounds Part #82

Well for the 2nd time this season and from what I can tell the 8th time in the last 3 seasons we met up with the Hounds. Like Rocky #67 we just can't seem to get enough. From my elementary math we are 2-5 against them since 2003, which is two more wins then anyone else in the Northeast has against them. The respect between both teams is mutual and honestly I know most of the guys enjoy playing each other. The games are usually competitive (outside of one of our wins and a couple for the Hounds) and they are consistently well played matches. Anyway if you have not seen one make sure you make it the next time it is on the schedule. This game was no different.

The Sunday game saw two proud teams that were a bit beat up. The Hounds only traveled with 19. New Haven had a full side travel but were down the scrumhalf, the captain, #12, and their big #5 for various reasons. (or is Big Daddy #4. All the forwards look alike to me).

The game opened fast and played out in typical fashion. The Hounds were looking to keep the ball in tight and use any mistakes against us. Thankfully we were not making many mistakes early. Some good loose play and penetrating back play gave the Old Blacks heavy possession in the Hounds zone. Ten minutes in the team put away the first try of the game off some great phase play with Leo putting in the first try deep in the corner. With Alfie betting against Jacko's chances of putting one over from the sideline he calmly slotted the first try of the game.

The game progressed nicely from there and some absolutely brilliant passing moved the Old Blacks from one 22 to the other but unfortunately an errant pass to the Hounds put them where they wanted to be, on the counterattack. They quickly moved wide and two minutes later the game was tied. Ten minutes after that the Hounds were deep in the zone pushing the scrum when it wheeled. It seemed to semi collapse when the #8 picked. The ref awarded a penalty try as Dave was called for breaking early. I was at a loss, but the score read 14-7. The Old Blacks kept fighting but each mistake in the middle of the field gave the Hounds opportunities, and with a man down this led to another try and a 21-7 lead.

Late in the half Captain Meatball, pulled out his secret weapon, chicken cutlets from the restaurant. Yes he actually took chicken cutlets from the all you can eat buffet because two hours at the buffet was not enough.....obviously. So the newly renamed Captain Cutlet whipped out the lightly breaded surprise and confused Hounds side was frozen as he put another one in and the halftime score read 21-14.

The second half saw the battle of the midfield. It also saw the funny talking scrumhalf tearing up the 17 year old touch judge (this tirade was proudly sponsored by Coors Light). The best thing that happened in the second half was playing time for Propane, Psarras, Andy and a full game for Brendan.

Scoring concluded with one try for the hounds and one penalty kick for New Haven. Final Score 26-18 Hounds. The boys were able to accomplish what was needed this weekend and secure a top four slot in South Carolina. We play NY-Manhattan in NY this weekend and then it is on to SC to play the defending National Champions, Santa Monica. Come down to the Playwright this Thursday and next and wish the guys good luck as we push on to San Diego. Good luck to fellow NERFU side Boston Irish Wolfhounds at nationals. We'll see each other again soon enough.
