After the brutality of Saturday we hauled ourselves on the pitch and with 5 players missing from the line up on Saturday....yet again we stepped up - it was a powerful game of contrasting styles - Wolfhounds with their big athletic pack playing their usual power game. New Haven always looking for gaps and willing to take the Hounds on it was always going to be interesting.
Again the officials found ever new ways to send players to the sin bin and both sides suffered - however for some reason we seemed to the ones suffering playing 13 on 15 for 10 minutes - eventually though both sides settled down for a hard but entertaining slog of game.
BIW scored early with a strong goal line push over but were unable to convert. Our goal kicking was left to a consortium of players but to no avail. Apparently when you are playing on the surface of the moon you should kick for the corner and go for the tries. Let's see that in the next keys to successful coaching books.
The remaining portion of the first half did not go in the Old Blacks favor. I cannot remember all the details (mainly due to the golf ball forming under my eye) but the Hounds ended the half with 4 tries to our one and one penalty kick for us. The team trudged to the sideline for the halftime beatings.
The second half saw an improved defense and more energy from NH and we were BIW out of the try zone for the remainder of the game. However they capitalized on mistakes and score three penalty goals.
New haven fought hard all game but couldn't catch enough breaks to close the big first half gap...Jacko touches one down on some nice open play for the team and Propane John Malazzi scores his first A side try after coming in as sub. He stepped up and defined "impact player". Boss man also saw some A side time and nearly ended up in handbags with a looming thug from BIW. As Bossman held him off by the neck cheers of "prison break" could be heard from the sidelines (Neuter). The ref stopped the game before full time because hell no one wanted to be there in the first place.
We battled hard. None more than Jason and Pablo in the centers who crushed everything in front of them - Jay Rubino coming in on the wing played an absolute blinder - Matt driving hard as always - it was game we could have won but after the pounding Saturday it was always going to be a tough call.
We can be proud of our club today - it was an awesome - no I'll tell you what it was an AWESOME performance from EVERYONE - there was no quarter asked and none given - we had a job to do we did it superbly - we now have the home fixture in the crossover. No team is going to be looking forward to coming to us.
Congratulations to the Wolfhounds for finishing as #1.
Lastly just spend a thought for Ryan who's season is finished after breaking his collar bone and a wound requiring stitches in his mouth during the NYConn game - big loss to us - our thoughts are with you buddy!
Fade to black as the team packs up and departs from the moon crater, I mean Van Cortland park.
