The boys made their first trip down south and unfortunately it did not include the town of Ft. Lauderdale, a sandwich called the Pittsburger...sorry Matty, or a famous bar with the last name Call. Well we can only go there so many times and with hopes of going deep into the playoffs it was not in the cards this year. So we headed to a small town outside of Philly which reminded me a lot of Ft. Lauderdale....ok so I am lying here but let's stay with the fantasy as it is better than the games turned out to be.
We started off in typical New Haven fashion…showing up late to Long Wharf. Thankfully, Burt gave us some leeway, but even that didn't help when a certain captain with an apparent snoring problem and a certain flanker with bad ADD completely missed the exit and ended up arriving about 15 minutes before kickoff.
Ok finally the game started on a muddy ground in the suburbs west of Philly. Talk about glamorous. The game showed the rust of the winter not to mention the beer drinking (not that we do that sort of thing) and the holiday feasting. It was a back and forth match, early rust from both sides, lot of whistles, couple penalties in the first period put us up 6-0. The early highlights came from some good play from the new Welshman Chris Allford at scrum half and the extreme shivering displayed by the new Samoan Amoso Lio. The second and third periods had Media storming back to take a 17-6 lead The Media team showed some good form and patience throughout the day and paid off with nice multiple phase tries on the day.
The third period had seen 5 or 6 starters sitting on the sideline for the Old Blacks and some pretty spirited talk about what we were going to do to them at the bar once we had a few beers to warm up. Unfortunately there was another period to play and luckily for us some of their starters came off and ours came back on. Ewan the Animal Steele scored like 14 tries (ok maybe it was 2) in the first few moments of the 4th period and brought the score to 18-17. Media came back with a quick penalty to go up 20-18. Ewan decided he hadn't done some sprints in about 2 minutes and raced through the Media team for his 18th try in 10 minutes. Ahead 25-18 Leo, size 40, Connors finished it off with a great try in the corner off multiphase ball to finish up the match.
Thanks to the team from Media for treating us with class at the bar afterward. They even trotted out their own Johnny Broker. He couldn't have been funnier or more drunk. I mean this guy was pounding V & T's at like 9am.
Good drink up but this was the start of a series of games where the southern boys showed that they have no idea what a post game speech is for. So I apologize for not saying more down there but just for the record Brian was basically wearing a full fleece get up under his jersey during the game and Jarod was pissed that I did not make him pay. No worries Rod I will make sure we discuss this soon......
Final Score NH 30, Media 20
Ewan Robinson - 3 tries
Leo Connors - 1 try
Dave Fischer - 2/2 pen, 2/3 conv
Chris Allford - 0/1 conv
Men of the Match - Ewan and Chris
